Food additives

With an aim to provide “delicious”, “safe”, and “healthy” food, the Shiraishi Group supports its customers develop products through the development of calcium carbonate and related seasonings.

Overview

Calcium carbonate has been approved for use as a food additive. It is mainly used to fortify calcium and improve texture. One feature of calcium carbonate is that the calcium content is as high as 40%, which means that only a small amount needs to be added. Another feature is that it is insoluble and has little effect on flavor or aroma. Nutrition surveys conducted by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare indicate that the calcium intake of Japanese people is currently insufficient. Also, in recent years, great attention is being given to extending the healthy life expectancy throughout the average life expectancy of Japanese people, and to promoting health for an independent life with physical and mental health. With the goal of developing calcium-enriched foods and creating added value in foods by improving texture, the food group supports the research and development for calcium carbonate and the development of related seasonings.
